Detailed Explanation
🎯 Purpose
This garden bed calculator helps you figure out how many plants you can fit in your raised bed or garden plot. It uses standard plant spacing guidelines.
📝 How to Use
1. Choose your bed shape and enter dimensions. 2. Enter the spacing between plants (in inches). 3. Or use the preset buttons for common plants like lettuce, herbs, tomatoes, peppers, etc. 4. The calculator will show you the bed area and how many plants you need.
🔢 Algorithm
Plant area per plant = (Spacing in inches ÷ 12)² Number of plants = (Bed area ÷ Plant area per plant) × 0.9 The 0.9 factor accounts for edge loss and irregular spacing.
💡 Why do it this way?
Why can't plants be spaced too close together? - Too crowded: Plants compete for sunlight and nutrients, grow weak and leggy, and are more prone to disease (poor airflow means mold grows easily). - Too far apart: Wastes growing space, and weeds move in. - Standard spacing is based on the mature canopy width of each plant — it maximizes space usage while giving every plant enough sun and airflow. For example, tomatoes need 24 inches of spacing because their mature canopy is 2 feet wide; lettuce only needs 6 inches because it's small. 📚 Sources: • Cornell Vegetable Growing Guide: https://blogs.cornell.edu/vegetabledocs/ • USDA Home Gardening Guide: https://www.nal.usda.gov/programs/whats-backyard-gardening
