Detailed Explanation

🎯 Purpose

This seed spacing calculator helps you estimate how many seeds you need for your garden. It can calculate by row or by total garden area.

📝 How to Use

1. Choose calculation method: by row or by area. 2. By row: enter row length and seed spacing. 3. By area: enter garden width, length, seed spacing, and row spacing. 4. The calculator will show you how many seeds you need per row and total.

🔢 Algorithm

By row: Seeds per row = (Row length in feet × 12) ÷ Seed spacing in inches By area: Number of rows = (Garden width in feet × 12) ÷ Row spacing in inches Seeds per row = (Garden length in feet × 12) ÷ Seed spacing in inches Total seeds = Number of rows × Seeds per row

💡 Why do it this way?

Why leave spacing between seeds? - After germination, seedlings need room to grow. Too crowded means they shade each other out, stems grow thin and leggy (etiolation), and they topple over easily. - Roots also need space — too crowded means roots tangle and compete for water and nutrients. - With enough spacing, seedlings grow strong, and you have flexibility when thinning (pull the weak ones, keep the strong ones). It's recommended to plant 20% extra seeds, because not every seed germinates and you need extras for thinning. 📚 Sources: • USDA Seed Planting Guide: https://www.nal.usda.gov/programs/whats-backyard-gardening • Rutgers University Extension: https://njaes.rutgers.edu/fs1220/
